The power of a mid-year reset

Naturally, January 1 is a popular date for rebooting, setting goals, and taking stock of your health, finances, and relationships. But maybe this is the year to try something different. Mid-year can be an even better time for personal growth and soul searching because often there are fewer holidays and distractions. Indeed, summer offers a unique opportunity for a mental health reset, serving as a natural pause in the year when routines loosen and days grow longer.

Here are three ways to supercharge your summer reset:

  • Ditch the unrealistic goals. Summer’s slower pace is a nice time to gain objectivity about all those goals you set at the beginning of the year. Are a few of them out of reach or no longer relevant? Scratch them off the list! Or, maybe a lofty goal needs to be “right sized” to a more manageable goal. Set goals such that even on the days you struggle the most, you can make one small step, even if it is just maintaining the level you were on the day before. On your best days, encourage yourself to take a few more steps.

  • Take “intentional walks.” This is a great time of year for walking outdoors. Next time you are out walking by yourself, pick one area of your life in which you would like to grow. Plant that seed subconsciously as you head out the door. Then let your mind wander during your walk. When you arrive back home, reflect on what comes to mind about what some of the steps you would like to take to nurture this area of growth in your life.

  • End the day well. The extra daylight in the summer months can make it feel like you have extra time. That’s a great feeling! See if you can add one positive habit to the end of your days, such as writing a few quick notes of gratitude in a journal, cleaning out one drawer, or devoting extra time with a family member. These 10-minute habits will help you accomplish a lot over time, especially if you stick with them throughout the year.

As always, our practitioners are here to help you take advantage of seasonal shifts and create an environment to reflect on the past months, assess your mental state, and intentionally set new rhythms that can carry you into the rest of the year with greater resilience and positivity. We look forward to a conversation!
